About Us
The Homestay English Immersion Program (HEIP) is a program that was developed in 2017 to provide a vacation immersion experience for students looking to practice the English that they have worked so hard to learn in classroom and real-life environments. Students have the opportunity to learn language techniques, explore local establishments, and visit the world’s most prestigious schools to learn about American culture and lifestyle.
Our philosophy is based on a blended learning strategy developed by Jean Piaget and Lev Vygotsky who believe learning and language learning are acquired through interaction, experiences, and exposure to things that can be observed. As we expand upon the Homestay English Immersion Program, we plan to continue instilling this pedagogical practice into our learning environments. 2017 Cohort
While participating in one of HEIP’s programs, students have the opportunity to practice their English with Rhode Island’s best and brightest English as a Second Language (ESL) instructors in areas like pronunciation, articulation, and even United States cultural and geographical history! In between learning sessions, students then use their language skills in live situations such as ordering meals; making retail purchases; and interacting with local students, teachers, and businesspeople. To round out their adventure, students are introduced to some of the world’s most prestigious collegiate establishments such as Brown and Harvard universities.
Benefits Of Cultural Immersion
Participating in a cultural immersion program provides educational and relationship-building skills that can only be gained through interacting with cultures outside of our own. Interacting with local communities provides an authentic discourse that cannot be taught in classrooms or via textbooks. It requires participants to move outside their comfort zone and conceptualized versions of how interactions in another language might play out. This, in turn, provides an experience that isn’t replicable otherwise.
Beyond the educational factor, the homestay portion of cultural immersion programs allows participants to build relationships with their fellow attendees and locals, both providing individual life-long benefits. Our program in particular allows for all this in addition to the flexibility to build the perfect program for your interests and needs.
